As baseball coach at PSU, he compiled a 275 - 215 record and took eight teams to postseason play. His 1967 team won the NCAA Pacific Coast College Division. His 1962 team finished second in the National NAIA.
As Athletic Director, he spearheaded the Portland State University move to conference sports for women (Mountain West and Pacific West), football (Western Football Conference), baseball (Northern Pacific and Pac-10 North), and wrestling (Pacific Athletic Division). During his tenure, PSU teams won four national championships in volleyball, two in wrestling, five league championships in football, and numerous others in baseball and women's basketball.
Roy hired very successful PSU coaches Mouse Davis, Don Read, Pokey Allen, Jack Dunn, Jeff Mozzochi, Teri Mariani, Marlin Grahn, and Greg Bruce - all of whom are now members of the PSU Athletics Hall of Fame with him. |
